How long has Mad Science been running camps?

The Mad Science Group has been providing fun, hands-on science programs since 1985. Last year over 7 million families participated in Mad Science programming in North America alone. Mad Science of Central Carolina is a franchise of the Mad Science Group that has been offering camps since 2004.

Mad Science camps offer a daily combination of in-class discovery and exploration, outdoor games and physical activities and hands-on applications of the scientific principles presented. Your child will be able to touch, see, hear, smell and taste what science is really about. We use an inquiry-based technique that allows even the youngest camper to enjoy our learning environment. Campers create a variety of take-home projects while exploring how science affects the world around us. Lifelong science fans are nurtured and the pursuit of science related careers begin.

Kids have so much fun they don't realize they are learning!

What is the child to instructor ratio and camp minimums and maximums?

Our camper to scientist ratio is 15 to 1. With the popularity of some themes, many camps will reach their maximum enrollments of 20. A second scientist will be added at enrollments 16 and above. Some camps have a different maximum depending on the capacity of the location.

The minimum number of campers necessary to hold most camps is 12. Mad Science tries to inform the parents as soon as possible should it appear that a camp will not reach its minimum registrations. On these occasions, we will offer priority enrollment in other camps or a full refund should the camp have to be cancelled. Also, Mad Science reserves the right to change the content of a camp at any time. Any content changes will reflect the scientific nature of the camp, but may vary in content from the original camp theme. Order of content may vary through the week as well.

What ages are the camps designed for?

Mad Science camps are generally open to children in grades K through 6th. We leave it to the discretion of the parent whether to enroll a rising 7th grader or rising Kindergartner. Red Hot Robots is limited to rising 2nd graders and above due to the fine motor skills required.

All Mad Science activities are specifically designed to be conducted in an age and grade appropriate manner. Activities are comprised of large group discussion, small team work and individual attention. Depending on the nature of the activity, our instructors may split the campers by age and/or grade to ensure the material is presented at an appropriate level. If there are different aged children in the same camp, we may use the buddy system where the older camper will sometimes help the younger camper. In some cases, campers work in small groups with children of similar age. At other times, the campers are in one larger group of all ages. This depends on the activities and the age distribution of the camp.

Children's Behavior Guidelines

Mad Science strives at all times to provide fun and safe science activities for all children participating in our programs. To fulfill this commitment, we ask that all children enrolled adhere to basic behavioral guidelines. Our instructors set clear boundaries and expectations as to appropriate conduct and we will hold all children to these expectations. We stress these expectations at the beginning of each day of each program. We ask for your cooperation should any parent be notified of any discipline issue. It is our intention to provide children with, not deprive them of, exciting and fun science. It is only when a child interrupts this positive learning environment that we would take any action.

Mad Science also has expectations of the parents whose children are enrolled. Only children with a sincere interest in our programs and the necessary maturity to handle the time commitment and the social interaction of a large group of children should be allowed to register. All parents should support the learning process after the camp is dismissed.

Parents must agree to the following to register their child; Mad Science assumes no responsibility for injuries or losses caused by situations or inappropriate behavior beyond our control. Further, I understand that damage to equipment and/or facility due to reckless acts and/or deliberate indifference by my child will be my financial responsibility. In the event that I cannot be contacted, Mad Science and any hospital/physician has my permission to give any medical attention or basic first aid to my child. By registering, I agree to this stipulation.

Who are the Mad Science camp instructors?

Mad Science of Central Carolina uses teachers from local schools who want some part-time summer work. We also have had instructors that are college students pursuing an education or science degree, children's entertainers or pastors and others who are engaging with children. Most of our instructors have worked for us in our after-school programs. All of our instructors have experience working with groups of elementary aged children and have undergone an extensive background check. They also receive summer camp specific training. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share the love of working with children and the desire to spark and nurture their campers' imaginations!

Do you offer extended care?

No. Most of Mad Science of Central Carolina's camps are unable to offer this benefit. Our partner camps may offer it. Please check with them about their availability and policies.

How do I register my child for a camp?

The easiest way is through our online registration system. It takes about 5 minutes and accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and checks can be mailed. All of our Mad Science hosted camps will be made available through our online registration system. Our partner camp registrations are typically handled directly through the partners and it will be noted on our registration system along with a link or phone number for you to contact. Note: registration requirements, start dates, end dates and minimum camp size may vary by location. Due to limited spaces in each camp, we cannot reserve a space for your child until we receive payment. If you are paying by check, we do not reserve your space until we receive the check.

How soon do I need to register in order to reserve a space for my child?

Some camps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date. We recommend that you register as soon as possible, because space availability depends on how quickly everyone else signs up!

Is payment due in full when I register and where do I send my check?

Once you register, your child has a tentative spot in camp. However, you must submit payment in full to reserve a spot for your child. At the end of the registration process you will be given payment options. Please contact us by phone if you have circumstances that may require other considerations. If you are using the online registration system, you can pay by credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover) or mail a check or money order. Payment by check must be received in our office within 10 days of registration or before the camp starts, whichever is first, or your registration will be cancelled. If for any reason your child is unable to attend the camp, please be considerate and notify us as soon as possible so we can open the spot to another family. If you have logistical needs for payment, let us know and we will help if possible.

Our mailing address is: 4447-B Wallburg Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107 Please make checks payable to Mad Science.

What is your refund policy?

For all camp registrations that occur our online registration system that occur at least 20 days prior to the start of the camp may be subject to a $25 service charge. Cancellations requested between 8 and 20 days prior to the start of the camp may be subject to a $50 service charge. No refunds will be given for cancellations less than 8 days prior to the start of the camp. At any time prior to the start of a camp, you may transfer your registration to another child with no service charge.

If we do not get sufficient enrollment to hold the camp, Mad Science will make every effort to provide alternative camp locations or you will be offered the option of a full refund.

Should your child be removed from a camp due to behavioral issues or consistent late pick ups, a refund will be issued for unused camp days.

If Mad Science is offered at another host/partner location, their refund policy (as well as other policies) may be different from ours. In these instances, Mad Science will adhere to the host locations refund policy. Please check with that location for their specific refund policy.

My child has attended a Mad Science camp before. If he/she took a particular camp, will it be the same camp that he/she has taken before?

We have multiple camps themes every year. Each theme remains the same from year to year. Most years we offer a new camp or one that has not run for a few years, so new materials are available. However, we have had a lot of children take a particular camp again and still enjoy it the second time. Different instructors often make for a unique experience.

My child has taken a Mad Science camp before, but I do not remember which one.

Email or call us and we will be happy to look it up for you -; 336-784-1818.

What should my child bring/wear to camp?

Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun!

Children should dress comfortably for that days' weather. We ask that children not wear open toed shoes to a Mad Science camp, especially no flip-flops. Also, as we will be outside on a number of occasions, please do not dress your child in any clothes that you do not want to get dirty. You may wish to apply sunscreen or insect repellent or send these items with your child. A hat and/or sunglasses may also be useful.

We can no longer provide snacks! Please send a snack to each camp session (both morning and afternoon if you enroll for both) for your child if you would like them to have a snack. If there is a camper at your child's camp with a specific food allergy, we will contact you and request that no snacks be sent with that food item.

Please clearly mark your child's name on all items he/she brings to camp. Electronic devices will not be permitted during regular camp hours - they may be used at lunch.

Medical Information about your camper

Prior to actual attendance at a Mad Science full-day summer camp, we require certain medical information from you regarding your camper. This is to assist the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper. If your child has any specific allergies to food, other camp parents will be notified so that their children do not bring snacks that may contain any ingredient that would cause a reaction in your child.

You must be aware that all summer camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. However, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind.

By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors, and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.

Do you provide lunch at camp?

No, lunch is not provided. You must send a bag lunch with your child if they are staying for the full day - half day campers do not need to bring a lunch. Please clearly mark your child's name on all items.

What is the drop off and pick up policy?

Our camps normally begin at 9:00 AM or 1:00 PM. Drop off is no more than 15 minutes prior to the start of the camp. Pick up is no more than 15 minutes after camps ends; either at 12:00 PM or 4:00 PM. Late pick up may result in a $15 fee.

For most of our camps, Mad Science cannot accommodate early drop off or late pick ups. To ensure our instructors are ready to provide your child with an exciting, stimulating and safe day, our doors will open promptly at our stated start time. Please do not drop off your child and leave them unattended before the start time of camp. Our instructors will not be responsible for your child until the start of the camp day. No pre- or post- care is provided. Some of the partner camps do provide before and after care - please see the specific location for their policies.

An authorized parent or guardian must be at the camp site prepared to assume responsibility for your child at the state end time of camp. We ask that you do not enter the room until the instructors dismiss the camp. The vast majority of our camps end on time. However, to ensure all the children complete the activities for the day, our camps may run a few minutes long. Should someone be unable to consistently pick up their child at the stated end time of camp, Mad Science reserves the right to charge a child care fee of $15 per half hour past the end of the camp day or possibly remove your child from camp without a refund.

Are these the only locations where you will be holding camps this summer?

Not necessarily. We are often in discussion with other locations to provide our Mad Science summer camps right up until the beginning of June. Please check out our website on a regular basis as we will be updating our schedule as soon as additional locations are confirmed. Also, if you have a particular location in mind, please bring it to our attention.
