Mad Science of Central Carolina has been running summer camps in the Triad and Charlotte areas for over 10+ years. In addition to the camps we run directly, we have partnered with local recreation departments, private schools, and other organizations to provide excellent summer science experiences!
The child to instructor ratio varies depending on enrollment. We always have at least one instructor for every 13 students for our preschool programs and one instructor for every 15 students for our elementary age camps!
While most of our camps are designed for rising first graders up to rising sixth graders, we also offer preschool camps for ages 4 up to a rising kindergarteners. Our “Red Hot Robots” camp and “Junior Engineers" camps are targeted to rising second graders to sixth graders due to the intricate building involved in those camps. If you are not sure which camp to choose, please contact us and we would be glad to recommend a camp!
Yes and no. A few of our camps, such as our preschool programs, are divided by age, but, for the most part, they are not. For some activities children may be divided up by age and/or ability, for other activities we may divide the kids up so the older kids can act as mentors to the younger children. Also, our low child to instructor ratio ensures that there is always plenty of help.
Mad Science instructors tend to be teachers on summer break, college students pursuing an education or science degree, former/retired teachers or other adults with experience in working with chidren. Most of our instructors have worked for us in our after-school programs. All of our instructors have experience working with large groups of elementary-aged children and have undergone an extensive background check. They also receive summer-camp specific training. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share a love of working with children and the desire to spark and nurture their campers’ imaginations!
Some camps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date. We recommend that you register as soon as possible, because space availability depends on how quickly everyone else signs up! You can also take advantage of early bird discounts when you register by 4/30!
We do not make any major changes to the camps each year, although each instructor does do things a little differently and some children do enjoy repeating a camp they have already taken.
Please call or email us and we will be happy to look it up for you.
The minimum enrollment varies from location to location. In the event that we need to cancel a camp due to low enrollment, we will inform you no less than two weeks prior to the camp. Contact us for additional information on camp cancellations.
Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun! Children should dress comfortably for that day's weather. We ask that children not wear open toed shoes to a Mad Science camp, specifically no flip-flops. Since we will spend some time outside and will be doing many hands-on activities, please do not dress your child in any clothes that you do not want to get dirty. You may wish to apply sunscreen or insect repellent, or send these items with your child. A hat and/or sunglasses may also be useful.
Some of our activities include food items that the children can eat as a snack, however we do not provide a snack every day. If your child would benefit from some additional calories during the day, please pack additional snack items. We cannot guarantee that coolers or refrigeration will be accessible at our camp-sites.
For full-day camps, we require parents to send a lunch and snacks. PLEASE AVOID NUT BASED FOODS. This includes peanuts and all tree nuts. Please clearly mark your child's name on all items he/she brings to the camp.
We do not require any additional medical information beyond what is asked in the on-line registration. However, if your child has any medical or behavioral issues that may need to be addressed at camp, please fill out the Happy Camper Form and send it in with your child on the first day, or email it to firstname.lastname@example.org This is to assist the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper.
You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. However, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind.
By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.
Maybe not. We are in discussion with many locations to provide our Mad Science camps. Please look at our website on a regular basis as we will be updating our schedule as soon as additional locations are added. Also, if you have a particular location in mind, please bring it to our attention.
If our schedule does not work with YOUR schedule then bring Mad Science to you! All you need is 10 children and a safe place to hold the camp! Flat fees and alternet pricing are available for smaller groups.
We may even be able to adjust the start time, length of the day, number of days, or customize our programming to match your needs.
